CDM2 – the final boss fight

Repairing a CDM2 is like the final boss fight of a 80s arcade shoot’em up for me. There are basically hundreds of things that might fail. Currently I am trying to repair a least one CDM2 for Sanders CD555 because his device failed again.

The issues are not easy to fix when not having the official Test-CDs and a special one to check the alignment of the swing arm. Thus on the mechanical part it is a trail an error which gets even harder when the control board is also broken.

It is quite important to take care of the flat cable. Due to its age the thin wires might get broken. I do have 3 beam units that would work fine whenever I would have a working flat cable. I am currently designing a new one but this will take a lot of time. I have never done this before and considering the costs, the first shoot should work.

To make my life easier (and to protect the flat cable of unnecessary bending) I created an extension cable to separate the controller and the drive-mechanics.

I finally fixed one device, replaced some parts in electronic in the focus-section. Had to play around a while with thee alignment of the swing arm and finally got one working. However, sometimes it fails to start playing or to jump to tracks in the middle of the CD.

I would be perfectly fine with the result but not when it’s not mine. Would be great to have one perfectly working CDM2. The fight continues…

…but I also got a nice working CD150 and after a basic service it should be ready for Sander. This time I plan to record a video on the servicing…
