Moving on…

I’ve been some time off with Covid during the first weeks of January and slowly started again with sports. Well, had some problems with breathing but finally I am fully recovered. Unfortunately, Frank had to wait quite a while to get his CD555 (the one from the unboxing video) finished, but now he got it back – fully recovered and updated with tons of new capacitors, a BT-Module, new belts, improved active cooling system… the full programme. I plan to record a new video about the cooling issues, explaining the details and the current solution. In addition, I have also been busy with some upcoming job-related changes, which occupied a lot of my time, but that’s another story… interesting times ahead.

Finally, it was time to get back where I stopped – the latest controller board, Revision D – to finish the firmware and to conduct some last test. I spent some time fixing a stupid bug for the temperature controlled fan. After I successfully finished all tasks it was time to reassemble another CD555 with the updated controller board. This time I also replaced the major part of the cables, which was necessary since my controller board has other connectors as the original use by Philips. What should I say – for the very first time ever I reassembled a machine and everything was working smoothly! It is absolutely worth to replace the cables.

There are still some minor changes pending from the controller board, but nothing dramatically. Just replacing connectors and add some little gimmicks.

It is also great to see my day-to-day used CD555 working fine in my office for the last couple of months. It contains the controller board Revision C and basic active cooling – a fan at fixed speed with the new backplane and heatsinks on the SAA70x0 chipset at the CD decoder panel. Some might remember, the same decoder panel I lost twice last year due to overheating. Seems the CD555 is finally getting more reliable…
